Placement Process

Any person 18 years of age or older may enroll.

All students wanting to work toward their High School Diploma, GED®, HiSET®, or ABE/Skills Review will first attend orientation. Orientation provides an overview of the opportunities provided by the school. Students also complete an evaluation pre-test in English and math.

Orientation is offered bi-weekly as follows by appointment only:

Monday             9:00 a.m.          Room 7/8 computer lab
Wednesday      5:00 p.m.          Room 7/8 computer lab

Prior to coming to Orientation you must self-screen for symptons at home

Following orientation each student will arrange to meet with an advisor to discuss goals and placement.  The advisor will then schedule each student to attend the regularly scheduled HSE Prep/Skills Review class.  Each student will have different needs and will begin work based on HSE practice test scores, previous schooling and education.

HSE Preparation at Woodland Adult Education

The HSE preparation class prepares students to pass all parts of tests (Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, social studies, and science). An individual study plan and schedule towards completing the GED® or HiSET® tests will be established for each student.

Students progress in the preparation class based on competency – that is, on work satisfactorily completed at 80% accuracy or better, not on seat time. Students work individually on each subject area. The majority of the communication will be one-on-one with the teacher, not lecture style.

Exit Criteria

Upon successfully passing the GED® or HiSET® the student will get a Certificate of High School Equivalency. A graduation ceremony is held once a year in June to celebrate and award diplomas to all students who have completed their requirements in the previous school year.

The test fee is $140.00.  Payment and registration is done at www.ged.com or www.hiset.org.  It is highly recommended that students take the HSE preparation class, offered at no charge, before testing.

Each person taking the test must present any one of the following items of identification on the day of the test.
  • Driver’s License / California I.D.
  • Passport with picture, name, and date of birth.
  • Military I.D. with picture and name on it

Anyone who is unable to keep their test appointment, must cancel within 24 hours of scheduled test or reschedule.   If proper notification is not given, there will be no refund.

Testing accommodations are available upon request when documented by qualified professionals.

There is no charge for the HSE preparation class at Woodland Adult Education. It is highly recommended that each student take advantage of this class.

If a person fails any part of the test, we recommend taking the HSE preparation class before retesting.

The GED® and HiSET® tests will be given at the Woodland Adult Education located at 575 Hays Street. The test is by appointment only.
